Elaine Showalter argued that literary subcultures all go through three major phases of development. For literature by or about women, she labels these stages the Feminine, Feminist and Female. I will use the Feminist approach in analyzing the story entitled "The Virgin".
Feminist approach defines the revelation of woman's real desires and struggles in the society.
This story is about Miss Mijares, a loving daughter who sacrificed herself for her sick mother. She wished to be loved by the man of her life. She's been dreaming this. But, she is always a good citizen on her society. The society where she lived dictates that a female will preserve her virginity until she gets married. She's a writer and one day a carpenter applied at her agency. She felt in love with this man. But, she still obeys what the society is expecting to a woman like her. Her mother is sick, she needs her. In the society, it is a woman's role to take care of the members of the family. she got no choice. She did all the responsibilities and forgot her own happiness, her own life.
Despite he struggles, she was able to overcome it. She go beyond what is expected from her. The last paragraph proves she's already a female. She already know her true identity and society shouldn't dictate her what to do anymore.
